Who are the online tutors?

We are a small team of actors and child care workers who work in the performance industry. When we are not performing, we try to bring a taste of the acting and performance industry to families across the world!    Parents can feel content with a safe and productive form of online tutoring as we aim to build children's confidence and public speaking skills as well as providing a safe environment in their own homes to learn and interact with other children online. We aim to supervise a secure environment for children of all levels of their performing abilities and foster an inclusive attitude of interaction between children during the classes.

Why are actors great with children?

Actors are trained to be expressive, animated and confident people which is perfect when you are working with children.   Our actors are very experienced with working with children throughout the year on school theatre tours, children's parties and pantomimes! Over the years we have built a strong and reliable team of 10 actors who love to meet new students online and help them begin their performance journeys.   All of the tutors are experienced, native speakers of English with Enhanced DBS certificates which parents can request to view.

What will the children learn in the class?

In this digital age, its more important than ever for childen to make their online expreience as interactive as possible. Instead of pre-programmed classes, we have live tutors and up to 4 other students who your children can interact with and safety make online friends new friends. Our child-care philosphy is to nurture confident and social children who are able to express themselves and have fun at home!   Our courses are a great way to help children to become more confident speaking skills for their future working lives. With a 20-minute performance performed for their parents at the end of each week, students have the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills in front of a crowd of parents - a very important tool for later in life. ​ In addition, with water games, language games, arts and crafts and ball games in between our drama-based activities, our Holiday Camps are a great way to spend the holidays for all children!

How will online classes work?

Classes will take place LIVE on Zoom with one of our team members and up to 5 other students from around the world. Classes will typically last 1 hour per session.   Here, Students have the chance to make new online friends from around the world!

Ages of the children?

To begin with, we are aiming these classes at children aged 5 - 8 and 9 - 11, but if you feel like your children are maturity level is appropriate - then they are very welcome to join!   Your children do not need to have experience performing, just a good standard of English and a strong internet connection!

What are the benefits of the online classes?

Improve confidence and communication skills in English!    We aim to improve childrens' confidence and online communication skills through fun activities, theatre projects, quizzes, competitions and games.   We want children to not only have fun whilst at home but also to learn how to behave in a safe manner online.

How will the British Theatre School ensure a safe environment for learning?

Since launching the programmes in April 2020, we are only working with our small, trusted team of actors.   Safeguarding is always a priority and our first few weeks of online courses will only be taught by our main team. Our staff will never ask for personal information such as contact details for students or parents & parents can stay close by with-in earshot of the classes or parents can record each class via the Zoom Recording feature.

What will I need to prepare?

Each week, you will receive an E-mail before your course begins letting you know what materials you will need, such as pens, paper and anything else for the course.

Where will my children need to be?

Accepted Answer

A room which has a strong internet connection. Use the website Speedtest to check your internet speed - a download speed of 50Mbps or higher is perfect!   A large room such as a living room is ideal. Please try to connect your computer to a large TV by using a HDMI cable (Your children may know how to do this!) - The larger the screen, the more effective and productive the classes will be!

Can parents take part or watch?

Of course parents can take part! Parents can also use the 'Record' button on Zoom to record the entire lesson. ​ We know that parents will want to feel comfortable with the lessons before leaving their children alone, so you are welcome to stay as long as you like or record the entire class with the 'Record' button on Zoom.

Do my children need to be confident / extroverted / have acting experience?

Not at all! The whole point of the online lessons is for children to improve their confidence, online social skills and performance capabilities.  All levels of ability are welcome. ​ Our friendly team have years of experience in bringing out the best in children's personalities.
