Teaching children empathy and emotional control through performance

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

Theatre and performance have long been known to benefit children in a variety of ways. Not only does it encourage creativity, self-expression, and teamwork, but it can also have a positive impact on a child's development and future success. In fact, some experts in the field of child psychology argue that theatre and performance can be particularly important for children as they grow up.

According to Dr. Paul Dworkin, a professor of pediatrics and director of the Office for Community Child Health at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, theatre and performance can have a significant impact on a child's emotional and social development. He states, "Theatre and performance provide children with opportunities to understand and express emotions, develop empathy, and improve communication skills." Through acting out different scenarios and characters, children can explore different perspectives and learn to understand and relate to others.

In addition, theatre and performance can also help children develop important life skills, such as public speaking, confidence, and perseverance. As children work on memorizing lines, rehearsing scenes, and performing in front of an audience, they build self-confidence and learn to overcome challenges and setbacks. This can be particularly valuable as they enter school and later, the workforce.

Moreover, theatre and performance can also foster a love of learning and a curiosity about the world around them. As children engage with different plays and characters, they may be inspired to learn more about history, culture, and literature. This can help them develop a lifelong passion for learning and exploration.

At the International British Theatre School, we are committed to helping children develop these important skills and attributes through our theatre and performance courses. Our experienced instructors use a range of techniques and exercises to encourage creativity, confidence, teamwork, and self-expression.
